We finally made it to Australia. After years of talking about it, we made the journey Down Under for Merideth's 40th birthday.
We didn't really know what to expect. We knew there was a budding craft beer industry. We had a list of breweries to visit and a few contacts. But that was it.
We spent two weeks in Australia. During that time, we drove from Sydney to Melbourne and back, adding 2,000 miles to our Ford Falcon XR6's odometer. Most important, we added 22 new breweries to "the List". A big…

“
One Ounce at a Time” is the latest episode of
One Pint at a Time.
Despite our whining about the one ounce pours, the Great American Beer Festival member’s session is now a highlight of our beer year. Beyond the vast beer choices, GABF is the one time of year where most of our beer friends from around the country gather in one place. Good beer, good friends… that’s what it’s all about.…

Our trip to Maine was the last of three successive quickie beer trips. Centered on Portland, Maine's largest city and brewing center, we also managed visits to breweries in small town Maine during our short visit.
In our two day visit, we experienced Maine's craft beer pioneers such as Geary's and the Great Lost Bear plus the newcomers Novare Res Bier Café and Maine Beer Company. And we ate a lot of lobster too.
We both reached the 500 brewery mark on the trip. Chris added eight breweries (503…

“
Three Days in the Big Apple” is the latest episode of
One Pint at a Time.
This was our first trip to New York City. We always try to maximize the experiences in our beer travels but, even for us, the list for this trip was ambitious. We had 32 beer places to visit and only three days to do it. Turns out, the number wasn’t our biggest obstacle to reaching our goal.
So enjoy our f…

Our Beer Travel Blog
The year is over and it’s time to look back and reflect on 2009. Over the course of year, we made two trips to Europe and one to Australia. Closer to home, we participated in the first SF Beer Week, hosted Monterey Beer Festival and attended the eighth Sierra Nevada Beer Camp. We also managed [...]
Last January I wondered what beer adventures 2009 would bring. The Year in Beer experiences of 2008 would be a tough act to follow, that’s for sure. We definitely didn’t travel as much last year, but as I look back on it, I realize I have lots of great memories. Here are my memorable moments [...]
Our friend and fellow beer traveler
Matt Venzke reflects on his 2009 beer experiences
So I’ve wiggled my way into a spot as a guest blogger on the grooviest beer travel page in the world! I am SO cool. But now I have to answer to a task-master of an assignment editor (Chris).
Recently, he told me he [...]
The eve of Christmas Eve was the last serious day of beer travel on our Australian trip. We had three breweries to visit and then we were done. Almost as important, we had been putting off Christmas shopping (“Let’s just do it in Sydney…”) so we still had a number of Christmas presents to purchase. [...]
Our fifth day’s drive on the Princes Highway brought us back to Sydney for the final portion of our Australian adventure. We enjoyed our time along the coast but, as they say, all good things must come to an end. We also needed to get back to Sydney to record the holiday episode of beermen.tv.
After [...]
It was time to leave Melbourne for our trek up the Princes Highway back to Sydney. The Princes Highway winds its way along the coast and we were taking five days to traverse its length. While we had a brewery visit on Day 1 and Day 5 of this drive, there was nothing in between. [...]
Apparently, it sometimes rains in Australia. After almost a week of glorious weather, we awoke Thursday morning to the threat of rain. But we wouldn’t let a little bad weather get in the way. Our plan was to visit some breweries south of Melbourne. After a farewell pot of beer with Ute and Wolfie, we [...]
After three great days in Victoria’s High Country, it was time to move on. Our next destination was the capital of Victoria, Melbourne. There we would part with Ute and Wolfie who were flying home to Germany the next day. We had heard that Australia’s second largest city had a better beer culture than Sydney [...]
After a good nights rest, we were back on the Brewery Trail the next morning. Our plan was to visit the two northernmost breweries on trail before coming back to Beechworth for a hike.
But before we sampled some beer, we had the one more piece of Hume Highway kitsch to see, the giant Ned Kelly [...]
We left ‘bustling’ Canberra early Sunday morning for what I thought was going to be a three to three and a half hour drive to the Victoria High Country, the northeastern part of the Australian state. We were headed to the self-proclaimed “premier craft brewing region in Australia” and their seven stop Brewery Trail. The [...]
From each person we met in Sydney on the first day of our trip we heard, “Why are you going to Canberra?” Our traveling companions, Ute and Wolfie, were asked the same question. They really didn’t have a reason, except they were riding with us. We, on the other hand, had two reasons to go [...]
Merideth turned 40 this week and she is not really embracing the milestone. Instead of making our normal holiday pilgrimage to Europe, I decided a trip to Australia was what Merideth needed to cure the turning 40 blues. This would be our first beer adventure outside of North America or Europe.
The onset of winter in [...]
We took the opportunity on Thanksgiving weekend to make another road trip to the southern portion of California’s Central Coast [see SLO Saturday and What is a Beer Geek?]. Quickly, our brethren to the south are building quite a beer community, something that makes us both happy and jealous. Early Saturday morning we were heading [...]
I am one of those beer geeks who eagerly awaits the holiday beer season. Whether a spiced ale, strong ale or whatever, give it a holiday sounding name and I’ll be looking to try it. Thus, when Jeff Moses asked if we could help out with the BevMo sponsored Holiday Beer Festival he was putting [...]
We welcome our good friend, fellow beer traveler and 2008
Beerdrinker of the Year Matt Venzke as our first guest contributor.
So, Chris and Merideth have both visited their 500th breweries! Wow! What an amazing testimony to their love of beer! And an achievement that makes me jealous!
I should explain that the friendship my wife Michelle and [...]
