Oh, I failed to mention ... none of the beers at Melange are available on draught. Just bottles.

Carbondale is your best bet, though that's not saying a whole lot. I'd say Pinch Penny Pub generally has an "okay" selection (they're big A-B folks though, so most of their draught selection is an A-B brand) There are usually a couple of Goose Island taps and InBev - Hoegaarden and Stella. You can find Schlafly (almost always the Pale Ale) at a couple of pubs. The best beer selection in town is at a little trendy bistro called Melange. They don't have anything groundbreaking, but you can get a few goodies there - Goose Island Bourbon County Stout, Unibroue La Fin Du Monde, North Coast Pranqster, Rogue Hazelnut Brown, etc ...

Good luck and welcome to the beer wasteland.

Hi Scott - Unfortunately, no. There are no craft breweries, or any breweries for that matter - in the southern Illinois area proper. The closest are roughly an hour away, or more - Buckner in Cape Girardeau, MO; Charleville Winery and Microbrewery in Ste. Genevieve, MO; Morgan St. and Schlafly Tap Room in downdown St. Louis, MO.

It's a sad state of affairs, but southern Illinois is sans good beer. Here in Carbondale, there are a couple of retailers where you can find a humble selection of good beers. Generally though, you have to travel, again, about an hour to find a really impressive selection - Randall's Wines & Spirits in Fairview Heights; Roof Brothers Liquors (one of my favorite retailers) in Paducah, KY or Corral Liquors in Granite City.

Are you a local? Visiting this area? I'll help however I can.

Cheers!

Hi Scott, Yes I'm in southern Illinois. The Copper Dragon, part of the Pinch Penny Pub complex - is no longer brewing beers. They actually haven't been for some years now. While the equipment is all there and intact - albeit dusty - it just sits there. The Copper Dragon facility is still used as a concert venue. The beers were never very good, unfortunately, and the almost complete lack of a marketing strategy doomed the place to failure. So, sorry for the long answer to your short question but there you have it. Thanks for the note!

Semper Fi Brother! My computer is "in the shop" at the moment, so I haven't been able to download my pics and vids from DLD just yet. I'm working off my phone and my girlfriends computer in the meantime. Thanks for the invite.

My undergraduate degree is in Philosophy. Are you doing distance learning, or are you coming to Carbondale to go to school?

Drink the Beer, Lose the Gut

From Mens Health, Weight Loss:Diet Strategies : Light Beers that Taste Good

Most light beers save only about 20 to 50 calories per bottle -- and some even outweigh regular beers. It's mostly marketing, says Garrett Oliver, Brooklyn Brewery brewmaster and author of The Brewmaster's Table. Want maximum taste, minimum guilt? Consult our guide to the best beers under 140 calories.

BEER DOES A BODY GOOD, Research shows alcohol can aid bone health

Taken from Mens Health; Daily Dose 03/10/09.

Forget milk!
New research shows alcohol is good for your bones. Scientists at Tufts University found that moderate drinking seems to prevent loss of bone mineral density (BMD) associated with aging. Bone loss can lead to osteoporosis, which can lead to increased risk of fractures and injury. The researchers think silicon in beer might be the reason they found stronger bones in men who drink one to two beers or the equivalent in alcohol every day. Bee… Continue

Flossmoor Station 10th Anniversary Beer

I went to Flossmoor Station this weekend and had their 10th anniversary beer. This beer was a very pleasant surprise, because it has no real style. The style description for this beer was that they opened 10 different beers and dumped them into a bourbon barrel. I tried to find out what ten beers but have been unable to do so. What I really like about this was all the different flavors it gave to this beer. The nose on this beer has a very heavy bourbon vanilla smell and a nice alcohol burn when… Continue

I just wanted to say if you have not had Founders Breakfast Stout on tap Man it is awesome and I did my best to brink it dry Friday night but I could not get her to float. (In the future I will try harder)
