Jake replied to Ray Grace's discussion 'Aleumination Recipes' in the group Aleuminati Alechemists
Hey Ray Grace, I have a couple of questions about the all grain version of Batch #1... First, I was wondering what kind of effect the gelatin has on the final product? Also, is it some special type of gelatin or just your standard grocery store…

Has anybody created fermentors out of 15.5 gallon kegs?

I bought a couple of Sanke kegs and would like to convert them into large fermentors. I have several questions if anybody has experience with this. First of all, I was wondering if there is a good cap to attach a blow off tube to the existing opening of the standard keg available on the general market (or easy to make from items at the hardware store.) Second, I was going to make a stand for the keg and put a valve straight out of the bottom to drain off the yeast bed. Does anybody have…See More

I've used light DME for heavier beers and corn sugar for lighter fare. I was under the impression that DME will give you a creamy malty head, whereas corn sugar will give you more of a crisp highly carbonated result. However, I haven't…

All New 12 Gallon Ghetto Rig

Thumbnail
I've been collecting the supplies to convert from the old 5 gallon stove top setup (where every grain recipe was just brimming on my 4 3/4 gallon pot,) to to all new outdoor 12 gallon setup with converted kegs from the scrap yard. I finally got enough supplies to brew a batch, but the system is still in progress (as you can tell from the pictures.) I just mash in the keg and sparge the grains a single time (no recirculation here... and no outstanding brewhouse efficiencies either (ie. 73%.) I…See More

I checked out their website and noticed 3 hour mash times for pretty much all of their recipes. I wonder if they just get a few extra percentage points on their brewhouse efficiencies or if the super long mash imparts some sort of character to their…

A friend made a jig from wood to hold a die grinder. He found a 2"hole saw fits the keg neck perfectly and can be used as the axis. Cut a board with a small hole in the middle, put it over the shaft of the hole saw and mount the die grinder to…

Brew kettles from kegs...

Thumbnail
Hello all,I just acquired a couple of straight sided kegs that I'm planning on converting to larger brew kettles. I'm wondering if anybody has a good tip on cutting a clean 12" hole in the top. Does anybody have experience with this conversion? Any tips would be appreciated...Thanks,Jake.See More

Jake replied to Ray Grace's discussion 'Hop Growing' in the group Aleuminati Alechemists
I as well am trying this for the first time this year. I hear hops are pretty easy to grow. I didn't find any information on what types grow best in which climates, so I just ordered a bunch of different types and we'll see which ones grow…

If you get some good recipes going and get curious as to the theory that goes into formulating recipes, check out "Designing Great Beers" by Ray Daniels. It's a lot to take in at once, but you can read up on particular styles of beer…

Do yeast starters like music?

Thumbnail
Have you guys ever heard of the urban legendish theory that plants that have been played music grow faster and healthier than those that grow in silence? I heard this growing up and couldn't help but apply it the first time I had a Wyeast smack pack just activated. I guess I generally listen to some tunes while brewing anyway, but the question is... what kind of music gets them going? Do they like something exciting, maybe aggravating, like some 1980's Metallica to get them really riled up, or…See More
