Carboy or Pail?

I use the pail for all 5 gal fermentations. The ease of cleaning is a huge win for me. I use a 25 gal food grade trash can for the 15 gallon batches. Never had a problem with either! A cut or scr... Continue

What's in the Carboy (or tank?)

My Kölsch is kegged, and I've got one fermenter with an Old Speckled Hen clone. I don't know if the recipe is good, it was a request from a friend. I'll find out in about 2 weeks!

Congrats to Rob and others...

Wow! I'm so glad I'm not at DOI anymore. I was very annoyed with websense because it blocked all my "research" pages. :)

Favorite beer styles:

Favorite Craft breweries:
Avery, Chimay, Paulaner (do they count?)
Who am I?:
I am a avid homebrewer and winemaker. I’ve been making my own beer and wine for many years. I started making beer when I was in college (mostly because the drinking age in the United States is 21). My first few beers were horrible. The beers are much better now, and I often supply my neighborhood with free beer! It is a great hobby!

I’ve been programming computers since I was 10. I first learned BASIC on a Sinclair computer and I’ve been programming ever since. I have a degree in Computer Science from Regis University, and a masters in Computer Science from the University of Colorado - Denver. I currently work as a software engineer consultant.

My current favorite video games are Call of Duty, Guitar Hero, and Oblivion - all for the X-Box 360.

Just tried a heather ale!

At the suggestion of a friend, I tried Fraoch Heather Ale. This beer is a bit different than most beers because the beer uses heather to bitter the beer instead of hops, but no so different that the beer is not familiar. If you're looking for a "hop recession proof" beer, I'd give this one a try. I'm going to try to find a recipe for it too! You can read more about it on my site. Cheers!

Beer Facts and a Digg-like site for Beer Bloggers

Hey all! I just added a post about some random beer facts. It's a collection of stuff I found out while researching for other articles. They seem to be popular, so I'll do these as I accumulate factoids. If you are a blogger about beer, you might also find BeerPoll interesting. It was started by the guy who writes BeerSmith. He started a Digg-like site for articles about beer. This is really co… Continue

Brew House Beer Kits

If you have seen these kits in your LHBS and wondered if they are any good, I wrote a review about the ktis. The short story is that it produces good beer, but the one I tried didn't "wow" me. If you are looking to try homebrewing, but don't want to be bothered with all the boiling and equipment, these are a great way to go. I'll probably try others over the summer to see how they are.

Belgian Wit and a celebrity

For all you homebrewers out there, I just posted an article about how to make Belgian wits. It's a popular spring/summer beer that almost went extinct in the 1950s! Tomorrow (Mar 14th) I've also got a blogger spotlight on a "very local" celebrity. If you want to learn more about the Beer Philosopher, check it out!

Alcohol myths and the last beer

I've just put up a few new entries on Fermentarium. One called The Last Beer on Earth was inspired by a question I posed in the forums. The other "22 crazy alcohol myths you swore were true" is a collection of urban legends surrounding beer and alcohol in general. If you're looking for light reading material, I'd love to hear what you think!

I took a peek at your Flickr pictures and noticed that you use Better Bottles as your fermenters. I was considering buying two of those for building my homebrewing kit. What is your impression of them so far? Any issues? Thx.

Saw your tip about Animoto on Twitter. I tried it out and posted a short video here on Aleuminati. I made from it. Fun tool! Nice find.

Hi Deege - good to see another fellow Colorado beer fan. I'll have to check out your blog to see what you're drinking. I live up in the Greeley area and have an office real close by to the New Belgium brewery in Fort Collins.

Hi Deege,

The Fermentarium is a terrific site. I'll pass the link on to some homebrewers down here. It'll spread pretty quickly.

Setting and Circumstance

There certainly are a number of things to consider when tasting a new beer - color, clarity, head, taste and finish all come to mind, but it seems a novice beer collector like me needs to be aware of another, sometimes more important aspect of the tasting process as well. I call it Setting and Circumstance. I expounded on the topic (perhaps to excess) at Beer Rant but feel it's important and (hopefully) thought-provoking enough to raise here at Aleuminati as well. The environment in whic… Continue

I was looking at my phone today and I thought: "Is it vain to have a picture of yourself as your wallpaper on your phone?"

TLB "Savor's" the moment

It's good to be back at the Aleuminati site. Please forgive our recent absence, we've been trying tirelessly to get our show picked up or sponsored in order to make it possible to bring you a show that is equal in quality and taste to the phenomenal beer we all enjoy. Step 1 in this journey is going to be our documentary of the Brewer's Association event: SAVOR. For those of you that don't know what this is, here's a link http://beertown.org/events/SAVOR/ Please take a look at the list of spe… Continue

I can finally say I love IPAs!

Thanks to the encouragement of many of you here on Aleuminati, I've been trying many IPAs over the last month or so and I can now say with confidence that I LOVE IPAs! I had my first Dogfish Head 90-minute Imperial IPA tonight and I just loved it! I wrote up a raving review of it tonight on my main blog. Looking forward to tasting more like this in the future.
