The Aleuminati-the not so secret society of better beer drinkers

The only thing that's mysterious is why people would drink cheap, fizzy beer.

What was the most recent dark brew you had? I've been enjoying Samuel Smith's Imperial Russian Stouts, Oatmeal Stouts and a Taddy Porter over the past week or so.

Wychwood Black Wych. Thin bodied mahogany highlighted stout, aroma of coffee, burnt toffee and chocolate with a hint of vine fruit, the taste is roast coffee beans, bitter chocolate with a nutty undertone and a hint of liquorice before a fruity dry hop finish. Sessionable.

I've been, all in all, let down by the Wychwood beers I've tried ... heretofore I've chalked it up to an over-extended shelflife. Hmmm.

Nah youre right Wychwood bottled beers are but a shade of ,say..Hobgoblin from the cask, or as it was when i last saw it on cask ten years ago. Black Wych is a canny stout for a supermarket bought bottle. Cask conditioned stout rocks my world.

As the weather starts cooling off I'm starting to pull out my more darker brews from the cellar. Tonight I tried a new dark brew from Louisiana. Abita Turbodog. A nutty brown ale with 6.13% ABV. Best to let this dog warm up a bit before embibing in order to bring out the full flavor. Subdued hop smell and a bitter chocolate malt taste. The taste improves as it warms. Decent.

Wisconsin's own Sprecher Brewery's Russian Imperial Stout. Simply sublime. Just remember to keep in a cellar, or... if you must refrigerate, let it sit for a good 15 minutes before opening. It's best served at the recommended 55-degrees.

Not to be taken lightly, it hits in at 8.5% ABV and comes in 16-ounce bottles, so it can hit you quickly... so be careful.

Cheers!

Just had Stone brewery's Stone Smoked Porter. Devilishly delicious! If you can find it, consider yourself lucky.

Other darks that I have enjoyed includes Rogue Shakespeare Stout, Young's Double Chocolate Stout, Duck-Rabbit Porter and Milk Stout, Red Brick Winter Brew Oatmeal Porter, Samuel Smith's Oatmeal Stout, Black Hawk Stout, Gonzo Imperial Porter, Trois Pistoles, Santa's Butt, Old Rasputin, Storm King, and of course good ol' Guinness.

Just polished off a bottle of Great Divide Oak Aged Yeti. Excellent. Lots of sweet malt, in a way an old-style barleywine. But the oak aging adds some vanilla and wood. Simply excellent. Wish they sold it in the Bay Area.

I'll second that recommendation William - Oak Aged Yeti is top notch. I also recently enjoyed an Alaskan Smoked Porter (2008) which I loved. Also I have been starting to age Victory Storm King Imperial Stout and opening a 12oz bottle up every couple of months. It's getting much better with age. And during a recent visit to the Left Hand Brewing Company's tasting room I had a nice Milk Stout there. Mmmm, one of my favorites.

It would have to be Redhook's Double Chocolate Stout (which will be out nationally next week). See a written review of it over at Confessions of a Beer Geek. And Erik and I do a very informal review of it on episode #005 of Beer Buzz on Beer Tap TV... which just went live! Go check it!

It's daaaaaaaaaamn tasty!

Brad and I went last night to Paddy Ryans in Hudson to a spur of the moment keg tapping of Surley Darkness. YUM :) We also had some Surley Bender. We'll be posting the pictures soon. Darkness is damn near impossible to get your hands on, so we were in heaven.

One of my most recent dark brews was the recently released Samuel Adams Imperial Stout from their new Imperial Series of brews. I was quite impressed with this brew as I am with most imperial stouts. Something about this style that I just can't get enough of. Well worth it if you've never tried this Sam Adams brew. A bit more expensive than a typical beer but it won't disappoint.

Now that it's warming up again. I'm starting to put away the dark brews again for the season. This is the best time, though, to stock up on your favorite dark brews, especially the stronger ones above 8% ABV and age them in a cool corner of your basement for next fall/winter. Aging does wonders for many strong dark brews.

Just joined The Aleminati and this group. Glad to be here.

I'm getting back on a dark beer kick and am starting to drink a lot more of them (I know Summer is almost here). I've got a bunch I want to try over the next couple of weeks so I'll probably be adding more replies to this thread as I drink them. The ones I like/love will be on the shopping list to add to the cellar for the Fall and Winter

The most recent dark beer I had was the Mikkeller Beer Geek Breakfast which was excellent. It is an oatmeal coffee stout. I had it with a fritatta and it went perfectly with the eggs, ham and cheese. I have also heard great things about their Beer Geek Brunch Weasel as well and managed to find one at Greens Beverages here in Atlanta. I'll be drinking/reviewing it soon and can't wait to try it.

I just tried Mikkeller's Black a few nights ago - whoa, what a ride! Powerful, but also sensual in taste and aroma. Start to finish, more than 3 hours of slow savoring...
