The Aleuminati-the not so secret society of better beer drinkers

The only thing that's mysterious is why people would drink cheap, fizzy beer.

After recently seeing an article on hop growing in pots in last months BYO and knowing that I had an empty half whiskey barrel, I thought I'd give it a try. I planted a single Cascade rhizome. Here's some photos of the rhizome and the pot with trellis set-up. I'll be sure to update periodically.

NIce. I'm trying my hand at this for the first time this year ... I have two rhizomes coming from Northern Brewer at the end of the month. Magnum and Willamette, if I recall. I'll likely kill 'em off, but it'll be fun trying.

I as well am trying this for the first time this year. I hear hops are pretty easy to grow. I didn't find any information on what types grow best in which climates, so I just ordered a bunch of different types and we'll see which ones grow best. How tall are you guys going to make the trellaces (sp?) for them to climb?

The pvc pipe I used is about 10 feet tall. I've got the trellises setup so that if it needs to be taller I can lower the lines having the bines kind of wrap around in a loop while the top end keeps growing upwards. I don't know how well that describes it but I got the idea from an article in the latest issue of Brew Your Own.

Here is my 2nd year Cascade already shooting up!

In case it's lost on anyone, I am in searingly hot Phoenix!

Were you able to harvest any cones last year?

Reply to This

A handful from 4 plants. As i understand it, one cannot count on a first year harvest.

That's what I understand also. I have heard of some getting something of a harvest the first year.
