My son-in-law recently shared some of his first try brew and I thought it was very good. I'm not much of a beer drinker but I would like to know more and be able to talk about it and not sound stupid. Also Christmas is coming up and I'm thinking maybe find a gift for this beginner brewer. Also this fellow is a landscape professional and serious gardener.

Can anyone suggest a good book or two I could read to get up to speed?

It's great to see someone else joining the wonderful world of homebrewing. My go-to book for homebrewing which I really like is John Palmer's How to Brew, I also really enjoyed Tasting Beer by Randy Mosher for learning about tasting and the variety of beer styles out there. They are also both regularly available at the big chain bookstores as well as on Amazon. Good luck and if you have any further questions don't be afraid to ask here.
