The Aleuminati-the not so secret society of better beer drinkers

The only thing that's mysterious is why people would drink cheap, fizzy beer.

I'm slightly obsessed wth the idea since recently, well i know since when actually - after reading about the Green Devil (Duvel, Pernod, gin concoction by Stephen Beaumont) in Ale Street News.

There's great potential in the beer cocktail world. My (all too often mentioned) favorite is the Picon bière, a drink that's always made me wonder if we were limiting our bittering agents too much to hops when there's a whole world of bitters out there to play with...

When i used to need an alcoholobotomy, I'd have a "baltimore zoo"; it's kind of a long island iced tea with a splash of beer... but 2 of them and you forget everything.

Interesting.

I've had a beer cocktail in the form of the Moscow Mule (vodka, ginger beer, lime). Very good! Deadly actually.

I'll have to give the Green Devil a try ASAP.

Hey no cheating. Moscow Mule doesn't have any beer in it. Just the word. After "ginger".

Mixing beer with other alcohol drinks seems so wrong that it may be just right! Will have to try some of these. Keep 'em coming!

started some pineapple rum infusion yesterday and ended up with plenty of leftovers (pineapple that is).
so made a cocktail riffing on Swinging Chad (you know elections and stuff) - golden rum/pineapple juice/Aventinus - came out pretty good.

An old favourite, that i believe you can now buy ready mixed (or is it just a beer brewed with the characteristics), is a Black and Tan or if youre in a place that does not serve Guinness (yes, there were places that didnt, maybe there still are) a Mackie Tan (Mackesons and bitter).
Here's a few i remember:
A Mother-In-Law (mix of Old and Bitter)
A Grandmother (mix of Old and Mild)
Car Bomb (Guinness with a shot glass filled with half Jamesons half Baileys dropped in it, shotgun it before it curdles)

A favorite in my family has always been Black Velvet- Stout and champagne or a Black Duck- Stout and Cold Duck. There is always the Snack Bite- Stout and Cider. Dr. Pepper-(if memory serves) Ameretto, Rum, and lager. Just a few I can think of off the top off my head. Although not a cocktail per say A Boilermaker (shot of whiskey served as a chaser for your beer) is a great way to mask a brew of lesser quality.

In resurrecting an old thread, here's an article that went out today about the burgeoning beer cocktail scene in the City. Granted, anything "cocktail" is considered a "scene" here at the moment, but hey, who are we kidding? These are times in which one could use a good stiff drink.

I also make Moscow Mules with homemade Ginger (N/A non-beer) Beer.
I imagine that a ginger flavored beer would be a good thing to try.
The copper mug is a key ingredient.
It melts the ice very rapidly and gives you a new level of cold refreshment.

I've also recently made mulled beer (beer nog) loosely based on this wikihow:

Definitely cut the sugar if you try it.

Following with interest.

My Irish grandfather taught me this beer cocktail as a cure-all for the next morning:

6-ounces Irish Stout (I use Beamish, but Guinness will always do the trick)
3-ounces Heavy Cream or Whole Milk (I use Soymilk)
2-ounce Irish Whiskey (I prefer Bushmill's Malt 10-years)
1-ounce Kahlua

I know it sounds awful, and it is at first. Once you acquire a taste for it though, you'll look to it on those groggy, headache-filled Sunday mornings.

Cheers!
